The Latenstein Flour Factory by Night (Katendrecht, Rotterdam) · 1 January 2011, 18:20 CET by Charles Vermeulen
The Latenstein flour factory by night.
This photo shows the Latenstein flour factory of architect J.J.M. Vegter on the Rijnhaven Zuidzijde / Silostraat by night. The Latenstein flower factory was built between 1948 and 1952 and now is the home of Codrico Rotterdam BV. The cube on the roof of the factory is the so-called Codrico Qube (Codrico Kubus), which has been transformed into a green ‘beacon’ in South Rotterdam by Primo Exposures and DSPS. The illumination of the Codrico Qube is part of DeLI-LIght, ‘a project by DSPS’, according to the then active website stDSPS.nl, ‘that focuses on light and art in the public space and more specific the area of Katendrecht’ and of which the ‘goals are to research the use of light and light-art in this area of urban development and to build an archive to use as a source of information’. The cube is in fact the glass engine room for the elevators beneath it. Visible in the front: the Rijnhaven harbour basin and a Christmas tree on the quay along the Rijnhaven.
